The Piave Wine Protection Consortium

For generations the wine producers of the Piave Doc region have dedicated their lives to improving quality and achieving excellence. To maintain and protect this excellence wine producers have sought recognition, to provide a proper qualification of their products - a guaranteed standard for the region. This aim was the founding principle of the Piave Wine Protection Consortium. Born in 1959, the Consortium immediately encouraged producers to improve the quality of their wines and set up special commissions for chemical and organoleptic (sensorial) analysis. Since then only the best wines in the Piave region go to market bearing the Consortium trade-mark, proof that the product has been voluntarily submitted for assessment and has passed the commission’s rigorous testing.  In 1963 state legislation (Legge dello Stato 930) gave the Chamber of Commerce responsibility for the region’s wine-growing sector and they took over the same duties of protection that the Consortium had voluntarily undertaken four years earlier. Since then both bodies have worked together to promote wine growing in the very best-suited areas of the province, improving quality and increasing the value of the wines in the market.
Today the result of that work can be seen in the Vini del Piave Doc (Denominazione di Origine Controllata or Controlled Denomination of Origin). And it’s the role of the Chamber of Commerce to guarantee that the production regulations, ratified by ministerial decree, are followed. The Chamber also holds a list of vineyards which can be used for each variety of wine, and of the farmland which falls into the region’s production area.  The first guarantee is the maximum quality of the grapes. The second is the evaluation of the specific tasting commissions put in place by The Chamber of Commerce. These commissions are made up of oenologists and experts who evaluate the organoleptic (sensory) features of the wines in relation to the production regulations. Only if the results of this test are positive can the wine be given Doc certification.
